The Department of Corrections manage around 10,000 people in prisons and 30,000 offenders in our communities. Our 8,000 staff are committed to supporting offenders to help them address their offending and gain skills that will help them lead a crime-free life.
One of the ways we do this is through our horticulture nurseries. The commercial nursery operations provide plants, flowers, and seedling to external clients under contract. Prisoners employed in this activity undertake a range of production horticulture roles from preparing and planting, understanding and caring for plants, to potting and transporting seedlings. Prisoners are supported to learn on the job towards the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 2 and Level 3.
We're proud to support Trees That Count with native seedlings from our nurseries, which will be planted in community based planting projects.
Department of Corrections Prison Nurseries has supported 13 planters since 2018.
